Sectionals Oil Patterns

Does anyone know why we use the same exact pattern for each sectional? I know it's easy to do it that way so it gives the impression of fairness since everyone bowls on it, but I think it would be better to tailor each sectional pattern to the bowling center it is used at. Each center has a distinct lane surface which greatly affects the way a pattern plays so even with the use of the exact same pattern each sectional essentially has a completely distinct shot, and will break down at varying degrees of speed based on that particular lane surface. So if the goal of using the same pattern is to create equal conditions in each sectional wouldn't the best way to do that be to make the lanes in each different sectional actually play the same way instead of just giving the appearance that they will? Also I don't know what is done about whether or not the centers all use the same oiler, the same oil or the same lane cleaner, but if that varies from center to center that would also affect the lane play. I think that there are enough people involved with college bowling that are knowledgeable enough to be able to tailor the pattern to the host centers and we should be considering doing that in the future.

Donut,
It may be the same "pattern," but I am almost certain in the past that lane techs have varied a few aspects based on the different lane surfaces at each.
Regardless, there is no way you can make them all play similar. Even you could somehow tweak each shot to play EXACTLY the same fresh, regardless of the surface, the teams bowling on it will break it down differently in each center.
The thing you need to remember about Sectionals is that you are not bowling against any other teams in any other Section, you are only bowling to make the top 4 in your Section. So whether that takes plus a million or minus a million, that is what it takes. I heard several people make comments like "if we were in THIS Section, our score would have made it." In reality, they probably wouldn't have shot the SAME score in the other Section. They could have done better, they could have done worse.
I felt the pattern was fair, for the most part.

The sectionals patterns seemed just fine to me, although my team did not bowl, only certain individuals bowled singles. The scores were right in the range of normal for the sectionals team event and if your team didn't bowl well, you did not make it to nationals.
And I am pretty certain when it comes to sectionals and nationals the USBC has been doing a good job by having a lane crew come in from Kegel to oil the lanes to their specifications, and not leave it up to chance the house laneman and oil machine screw it up. Example, I could see plenty easy how AMF could screw this up with two of the sectionals being at AMF corporate houses and we all know what A.M.F stands for, hehehe!

The patterns are not tweaked in any way from house to house. I can remember John Janawicz explaining that the lofting contest in Peoria two years ago on the wood was due to each house being oiled exactly the same, even though three of the four centers were on proanvilane, and peoria was dirty wood.

Yea even if you laid out the same pattern, board to board, it would never play the same at two different houses. Especially where you follow teams that break it down differently. That's why practicing on those patterns is a guide, not a rule, when prepping for a shot.

You cannot control human will, if a team you are following wants to play the track... Well you better find a way to eek out some 200s based on what is left for you. If not, hopefully no other team adjusted in 64 baker games on what was out there to play

There are also different teams at each section that will break down the pattern differently. If there are more good teams at one section, chances are those teams will break down that pattern to where it will become more score friendly.

Chowe - atleast one of the sections outside of peoria that year was at an amf house (allentown for sure), maybe two, so they are not on proanvilane. Its obviously not wood, but they get lofty quicker than proanvilane would, in theory. Good point, regardless.
