Hello, I was wondering how I could get recruited to bowl in college. I am a junior at Fort Zumwalt South High and I am wanting to bowl at a high level in college. I have been the league high average holder for the past two years averaging about 214 in my high school league. I have bowled on sports shots for the past couple years and averaging around 190. I am looking to major in the feild of accounting or something business related. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Tim,
If your main worry when looking for a college to bowl for is about having a good chance to bowl a lot, then you are probably looking at bowling for a college for the wrong reason. Being a potential freshman collegiate bowler there is a lot more to it than just worrying about how much you will bowl. Some things a potential freshman bowler should be looking at when choosing a college to bowl for include:
- Is this school the right institution for me educationally, as getting an education is why we go to college right? - Is the institution right for me socially? - Am I really here to bowl for a team competitively or am I here to bowl on a recreational club for the enjoyment of bowling? - What can I bring to the table to help the team succeed in the present. (This may include taking your lumps on the B or C team and working your way up to bowling on the main team) - What can I do to further my bowling skills both physically and mentally to help this team succeed in the future. (All bowlers, even the best in the world know there are things in their bowling game they can improve upon, and one of the many faults of the novice collegiate bowler is, they worry about striking too much and don't give two hoots about shooting spares and mental focus)
I'm sure I could think of a few more things to add later, maybe you got some more good ones Uffdaddy?

Education is always the most important thing to look for before deciding on what college to look at for bowling. I know there is some work to be done to my game before stepping out onto the collegiate level on a main team somewhere. I'm just not exactly sure what college is best for me. This is my first time starting to look at schools and I'm just trying to get some feedback and get my name out to colleges.

Bowling events like Junior Gold helps out quite a bit. There are usually several coaches at Junior Gold and I'm sure most of them at least follow the event and others like it online. When I was looking around at schools I found emailing the coaches to be particularly helpful. There is a list of coaches and contact information that can be found on bowl.com at http://membership.bowl.com/USBCsearch/SearchCollegesMain.jsp. Once you have an idea where you might like to go they should be able to help you figure out if their program is the right place for you to be.

I think Matt has been reading my diary again...
It is very true that academics are first. You don't go to college to bowl, you bowled to help GET you to a college you want, and bowling is a luxury.
Coming into a program, you should not have any expectations about playing time. All you can expect is to work hard, and if you improve and earn your spot, you will travel. Even then, if you are on a trip, and the team needs you to sit, you sit. Learn everything you can, and keep your team positive.
I tell all of my players (and this is a hard thing to understand and implement) they need to be physically and mentally ready to throw EVERY shot, then entire year, but also mentally ready to not throw a SINGLE shot all year, and they have to face both possibilities with the same attitude and willingness to learn and improve.
