Format:

The teams in both the men's and women's divisions will be divided into a two squads. The participants bowl 9 conventional team games. Each game, each team will bowl against the other team scheduled on the same pair of lanes and 2 teams on an adjacent pair of lanes. Each team receives a match-play bonus, in addition to their scratch game score, of 50 points for each opponent defeated and 25 points for each opponent tied. After the 9 games, the top 6 men's and top 3 women's teams from each squad and the next 4 highest men's and 2 highest women's teams advance to round 2. The teams advancing will bowl 2 position round games using the same format. The teams will finish in order based on total pinfall plus bonus points.

Notes:

The third tournament of the 1997-98 season to advance a team directly to the Intercollegiate Bowling Championships (IBC). The high team not already qualified for the IBC after the 11 team games based on total pinfall with bonus will advance.

The entry fee is $195.00.

The field is limited to the first 64 men's teams and the first 32 women's teams.
